Your car keys can be used as a devastating self defense weapon.  It is important to learn to use car keys for self defense correctly.  An added plus for using your keys for defense is they are almost always with you. You don’t need to carry special keys, neuropathologist defense key chains, pulmonologist or other self defense tools .  All you need is proper training.

When we discuss using a key for self defense we are usually talking about a set of keys.  Very few of us carry only one key around in our pocket.  It is usually a set of keys.

It is common thought that with a set of car keys you would put three keys in between your fingers as follows 1st and 2nd, asthma 2nd (index) and third and 3rd and 4th (pinkie).  Hold the large end of keys in your palm with the shafts sticking out.

When striking with this position the keys tend to turn and run up in your hand.  You will find that the contact points between your keys and your opponent will vary drastically to few or no good solid hits.

In this position the keys may rip into your fingers and palms.   This can be the worst thing to do with a key. Using keys in this way will probably lead to a dozen stitches and a hand that may not function right.

From my own self defense  practice, I have found that using one key, your largest key, works better.  Take your key and hold it between you thumb and forefinger with larger part of the key nestled in your palm and fingers.

When defending yourself against an attacker use your key more like a knife by taking jabs at your opponent.  Doing this will give you more good hits, deeper hits and hits that will sway your attacker from further attack.

My next suggestion is to practice.  Practice so if you are ever attacked you are prepared.  If you have no other means of self defense remember to carry your key in your hand.  It is better to have it in your hand and not need it than to need it and not have it your hand.

Now it is the moment of truth;  You are walking through that dark parking lot late one night.  You have your key ready to go and the attack comes.  What do you do?

The first thing is:  Keep your head and don’t panic.  Of course you will have an adrenalin rush and you’ll feel fear.  Use these as energy to your advantage.  Panic is what gets most people hurt or killed.  Don’t Panic!

Next is aim.  Aim is important.   Aim for the face.  Eyes, Nose, Cheeks, temple are all good points.  Don’t worry about hurting your attacker, after all he/she does not care about you.

If your attacker grabs you first and attempts to incapacitate your arms hit anywhere.  Make a point to keep your key in your hand.  Don’t drop it.  A couple hits into a leg or abdomen will give your attacker the incentive to let go.  Then go for the face.

The important thing is to take your attacker by surprise.  Most attackers are not expecting a fight.  Attackers count on panic and fear to take over making overcoming you easy and fast.

There are a ton of ideas like this for protecting yourself, but women should really keep their wits about them. The most important thing is to stay clear and calm enough to take action. Freaking out will never help you when in danger.
Great article. Important information for all of us.
